Bugs, server instability, wipes, broken missions, lost cargo, and doors with an unhealthy amount of authority.

There is more here than ship combat.
Mining, hauling, salvage, exploration, rescue, bounty hunting, and the occasional three-hour recovery operation.
Do not overbuy
You do not need an expensive ship.
Start with a game package. Nearly every useful ship can be earned or rented in-game, and experienced players are usually happy to let a new pilot borrow something irresponsible.
Spending more can change your starting convenience. It does not replace learning the game, finding a crew, or knowing when the elevator is clearly plotting against you.
